The mission to Mars proves to be successful since the data recovered contains the blueprint for a massive weapon – which the Alliance will call “the Crucible” – capable of destroying the Reapers. Before leaving Mars, Shepard has communication with the Trouble Man which reveals to him that Cerberus seeks to control the Reapers rather than destroy them. There, Shepard finds himself confronted with Cerberus whose agents seek to seize information from the Alliance.
Faced with the scale of the offensive, Shepard is forced to flee the planet in an attempt to secure aid from major galactic civilizations while Anderson remains on Earth to coordinate the resistance.īefore Shepard leaves the solar system, Admiral Hackett, who commands all of the Alliance’s fleets, orders Shepard to travel to Mars where the Alliance is researching a Prothean archive with the goal of finding information about the Reapers and how to fight them. It is precisely at the time of this meeting that the Reapers launch a massive attack on Earth whose defenses are quickly overwhelmed.
